Why the Conch?
The conch shell, for me, is a symbol of what therapy is about.
Foremost, the conch symbolizes listening. If you hold it close to your ear, and listen carefully, you can hear the sound of the ocean. In therapy, I listen closely to you, and you bring an ocean full of experience to bear. The ocean is full of life, is where life began, and keeps us alive still. I listen for these forces within you, sometimes tugging, sometimes swirling, sometimes crashing, sometimes swelling.
The conch is delicate, but also strong. Its conical shape keeps it from breaking easily, despite being tossed onto a rocky shore again and again. It has a tender, shiny, hidden interior but can be sharp and knobbly on the outside. In a way reminiscent of the conch, therapy can make you become vulnerable and strong at the same time.
Like people, there are conch shells all over the world, but each one is different, beautiful, and complicated. You have to spend some time getting to know the shell in your hands to see what makes it special.
